Phu Quoc Airport Expansion Project Achieves Breakthrough Construction Progress to Welcome APEC 2027
As a key project serving APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc, the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project, invested by Sun Group, is being implemented at a rapid pace, with many components expected to be completed from 2026.
Record-Breaking Construction Speed in the Aviation Industry
Reporting to the Central Working Group and General Secretary To Lam on November 20th, and Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung on November 19th, the Chairman of the People's Committee of An Giang Province, Ho Van Mung, reported that 7 projects have met or exceeded the set deadlines, including the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project.
According to the project investor, Sun Group, in phase 1, to serve APEC 2027, construction has been intensified since July 2025, including the construction of a new runway (runway 2), VIP terminal, and Terminal 2. For Terminal 2, construction reached the 4th floor in just 4 months.

It is expected that by the end of 2025, Phu Quoc Airport's T2 terminal will have 85% of its structural work completed, the VIP terminal will have 100% of its structural work completed, 100% of its steel structure, and 100% of its MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) completed. Thus, the second runway is committed to completion by June 2026; the VIP terminal by October 2026; and the T2 passenger terminal by the first quarter of 2027.

Therefore, the entire project will be completed in just 18 months of construction, considered a record speed in the aviation industry. Speaking and giving directions during a working session with the People's Committee of An Giang province on November 19th, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung acknowledged the efforts of the province and the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, and highly appreciated the investors and contractors for their decisive and rapid implementation.
"The two projects invested by Sun Group, including the Airport and the APEC Convention Center, are progressing very well. Inspections every two months show significant progress, from underground work to piling... changes happening daily and hourly. This gives us great confidence in the progress," the Deputy Prime Minister welcomed.
A world-leading modern international airport
Identified as a key project in the preparation for APEC 2027, and a gateway to affirm Phu Quoc's position on the international stage, Phu Quoc International Airport is being upgraded to become one of the most modern airports in the world. The project is invested by Sun Group, with the construction participation of CPG Singapore (the company that designed Changi Airport) and aviation consultant Artelia Airport (France). Upon completion, the project will be directly managed by Singapore's Changi Airport Group (CAG), the airport's management company.
The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project has a total investment of nearly 22,000 billion VND. According to the approved plan, the airport will achieve level 4E, as stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 787, or Airbus A350. The project covers a total area of 1,050 hectares, increasing the airport's operating capacity to 20 million passengers per year, 4.5 times its current capacity.

The runway infrastructure includes expanding the existing Runway 1 and constructing a new Runway 2, measuring 3,500 m and 3,300 m respectively. The apron system will be expanded to over 120 parking positions, with 71 positions directly connected to modern jet bridges.
Terminal 2 is designed with inspiration from the image of the Phoenix – a symbol of strength and rebirth. The VIP terminal, with a construction area of 6,000 m², was designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, the "father" of the iconic Phu Quoc Kissing Bridge, inspired by the image of a sea eagle – a symbol of freedom, grace, and harmony with nature. The VIP terminal will be where heads of state will be welcomed during APEC 2027 and other important events in Phu Quoc in the future.
Phu Quoc International Airport will comprehensively apply a series of world-leading aviation technologies, including the Total Airport Management (TAM) operational model, a biometric system for seamless, contactless journeys, a modern ICS baggage handling system, and automated parking, underground refueling, and remotely controlled jet bridges, aiming for a leading smart airport standard in the region, while reducing check-in time to just 15-20 seconds per person.
Phu Quoc International Airport is racing against time with unprecedented construction progress to achieve the common goal: successfully hosting APEC 2027 – a special diplomatic and political task – and creating long-term development momentum for Phu Quoc. When each major component of the airport is completed ahead of schedule, it is not only a step forward in infrastructure, but also a testament to the power of synergy – with the State providing direction and businesses taking the lead, transforming Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone into a breakthrough growth pole for An Giang province, becoming a modern, innovative center for maritime economy, tourism, and services for the world.
